Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is based on the idea that the beliefs we hold cause us to become depressed, anxious, enraged or upset. In the words of Epictetus around 2,000 years ago, "What disturbs men's minds is not events but their judgments on events." When our goal of being happy is blocked, we can respond in ways that are healthy and helpful, or we can react in ways that are unhealthy and unhelpful.

REBT helps people change their irrational beliefs into rational beliefs. In REBT, the therapist disputes the client's irrational beliefs, and in doing so the client begins to understand that there is no reason why he or she absolutely must have approval, fair treatment, or anything else that he or she wants.
